“I
By Shahaddah Jack

I am from

I am from
I am from a lineage of powerful women
Forgotten women
Women who stayed quiet for so long
They forgot the sound of their own voice

I am from a lineage of martyrs
A people who died for their freedom
A people who chose sacrifice over suffering

I am from the missing parts of our
history books
I am from the stories that dissolved on colonized tongues

I am from my mother
I am from my ancestors
i am from the earth
I am from
I am from
I am
