Greetings in Cree: Toronto is derived from the Mohawk word tkaronto, which means "where there are trees standing in the water." The city is situated on the traditional territories of many Indigenous Nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, Chippewa, Haudenosaunee and Wendat peoples.
